Guochengli Architectural Complex

The Guochengli Architectural Complex is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangsu Province.

The Guochengli Architectural Complex is situated at No. 1-23 Guochengli Lane, Shengli Community, Lianyun Subdistrict Office, Lianyun District, Lianyungang City. Built in the early 1930s by the Shanghai Zhongxing Company, it showcases a fusion of Chinese and Western design, with a distinct Shanghai Shikumen influence. The complex is made up of four courtyards, each with a long, narrow side courtyard attached to its exterior. Constructed with a combination of stone and wood, the entire site covers an area of 1,300 square meters.

The four courtyards are arranged in two rows, separated by a 3-meter-wide north-south flagstone path, with two symmetrical courtyards on either side of the path. The distance between the northern and southern courtyards is 1.2 meters. Each courtyard is 17.2 meters wide and 21.8 meters deep. The layout consists of connected single-story houses with double-sloped roofs in a tripartite formation, along with perimeter walls facing the flagstone path. The walls are fitted with exquisitely carved stone door frames. The eaves of the buildings inside the courtyards are supported by wooden columns, and the gable walls feature circular brick louvered vents.

Originally built in the early 1930s as residences for government officials and senior staff during the initial phase of Lianyungang Port’s construction, the Guochengli Architectural Complex now houses employees of the port authority. This architectural ensemble serves as primary physical evidence for the study of Lianyungang’s port history. It is among the earliest structures from the port’s founding period and stands as a classic example of Republican-era architecture in Lianyungang. In 2010, it was designated as part of the fourth group of municipal cultural heritage sites by the city government. In 2011, it was listed as part of the seventh group of provincial cultural heritage sites in Jiangsu Province.

The protected area encompasses the outer walls of the architectural complex on all sides.

Construction Control Zone:

East to the tunnel entrance, south to the perimeter wall, west to 50 meters beyond the western wall, and north to the southern boundary line of Zhongshan East Road.
