Former Site of Lianyungang Railway Station

The former site of Lianyungang Railway Station is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The former site of Lianyungang Railway Station is located beneath Zhongshan North Road in Lianyun Subdistrict, Lianyun District, Lianyungang City. It was first built in 1933 and completed in 1935. The building features a Western-style flat roof, with a clock tower situated at the eastern end, giving it a ship-like appearance from a distance. The office building has four floors, while the clock tower has ten (including the basement), all constructed with a steel frame and concrete structure. The building covers a construction area of 1,170 square meters, with a usable floor space of over 3,000 square meters. Originally serving as a shared office building for both the Lianyungang Port and the railway station, it was contracted to Fangji Company under Nanjing Fuxing Company, a subsidiary of the former Nationalist Government's Longhai Railway Administration, for construction. On September 20, 1937, the building was struck by Japanese artillery fire twice during the invasion of China. It underwent renovations in 1970 and 1983. This building has long been an iconic landmark of Lianyungang and is one of the early constructions from the city’s port development period. It holds reference value for the study of the history of Lianyungang Port, the city’s economic development, and the history of China’s seaports. In 2001, it was designated as part of the third batch of cultural relic protection units in Lianyungang City. In 2011, it was listed as part of the seventh batch of cultural relic protection units in Jiangsu Province.

Lianyun Subdistrict: The Lianyun Subdistrict Office is located at Lianyungang Port. Originally named Laoyao, it began to be called Lianyun after 1933 (the 22nd year of the Republic of China), taking the first characters of “Lian Island” and “Yuntai Mountain,” symbolizing “a bustling harbor with ships and sails connecting the clouds, and flourishing maritime trade.” The Longhai and Lanzhou–Xinjiang railways, vital east–west arteries of China, extend westward from here, making Lianyun Subdistrict the eastern bridgehead of the New Eurasian Land Bridge. In 2003, with the approval of the Jiangsu Provincial Government, the former Lianyungang Town was abolished and Lianyun Subdistrict was established. In February 2005, the municipal government approved the merger with the former Ta’an Subdistrict to form the new Lianyun Subdistrict.
