Cliff Inscriptions in Longmen Village

The cliff inscriptions in Longmen Village are a cultural relic protection unit of Lianyungang City.

The cliff inscriptions in Longmen Village are located on the seaside cliffs of Little Coffin Mountain (Hou Damen) in Longmen Village, Xugou Town, Lianyun District. The inscriptions stand 1.5 meters high and 2.5 meters wide. They were written by Huang Daochuan in the year 1899 (the 15th year of the Guangxu reign). The main text reads “云水荡胸” (“Clouds and Waters Stir the Heart”), in clerical script, with each character measuring about 50 centimeters in diameter. Below is a postscript in regular script. The calligraphy of the inscriptions is neat and well-proportioned, with full and rounded structures. To some extent, they reflect the conservative style of late Qing literati, providing valuable material for the study of calligraphy art in the late Qing Dynasty. They were designated as part of the first group of cultural relic protection units of Lianyungang City in 1982.
