Cliff Inscriptions at Taibaijian

The Cliff Inscriptions at Taibaijian are a cultural relic protection unit of Lianyungang City.

Taibaijian is located in Xin County Village, Chaoyang Town, Lianyun District. Legend has it that the poet Li Bai once visited this place, hence the name. Within the valley lies a huge rock inscribed with the three characters “Taibai Stone” (Taibai Shi), without any signature. The cliff inscriptions consist of four seven-character quatrains, carved on the “Taibai Stone.” They were composed and written by Zhang Baichuan of Xin County in the early years of the Republic of China. The inscriptions measure 300 cm in height and 450 cm in width, span 24 lines, with characters 10 cm in size. The poems mainly depict the seasonal scenery of Taibaijian. The upper right corner of the stone carvings has been damaged, but the rest remains well-preserved. The Wulongtan Cliff Inscriptions are located about twenty meters northwest of the Taibai Stone. These consist of four five-character quatrains, describing the seasonal landscapes of Wuya Cliff. They were composed and written by Zhang Baichuan of Xin County in October of the 32nd year of the Guangxu reign (1906). The inscriptions hold certain artistic and historical value. They were designated as part of the first group of cultural relic protection units of Lianyungang City in 1982.
