“Longevity Hill” Stone Inscription

The “Longevity Hill” stone inscription is a cultural relic protected at the district level in Lianyungang’s Lianyun District.

The “Longevity Hill” stone carving is located atop Longevity Hill in Sucheng Subdistrict. To the south, it overlooks Sucheng Reservoir; to the north, it faces the Wudao’an Valley; to the west, it connects with Western Sucheng Mountain; and to the east, it borders the mountain basin of Sucheng.

The characters are about 50 centimeters in size, written in regular script without a signature. It is said to have been inscribed by Monk Zhenya. Legend has it that during the early Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, led his troops eastward to this area. Overnight, his soldiers built an earthen fortification around the hill and shouted “Long live the Emperor!”—from which the hill got its name. During the Republic of China era, Xu Hongbin and Monk Zhenya of Faji Temple once left inscriptions on the southern slope of the hill. In the 27th year of the Republic of China, the Eighth Guerrilla Corps of the Kuomintang covered these with their own inscriptions of anti-Japanese vows.

Sucheng Subdistrict: Administrative adjustment in 2013: Sucheng Township was abolished and Sucheng Subdistrict Office was established. After the adjustment, the administrative area covers 21.39 square kilometers with a population of 4,525, including one residents' committee (Xiazhuang) and five villagers' committees (Dongyawei, Gaizhuang, Baoshan, Dazhuyuan, and Liuyunling).

A township under the jurisdiction of Lianyun District, Lianyungang City. Established as Sucheng Township in 1948, reorganized as a commune in 1958, and reinstated as a township in 1983. Located in the southeastern part of the district, 8 kilometers from the district government and 4 kilometers from Lianyungang Port.
