Sheyang Island Park

Sheyang Island Park is located on the picturesque banks of the Sheyang River. To the east lies Xixin Temple, to the south faces Mingda College, to the west borders the Sheyang River, and to the north it looks across the river at the nearby seaside resort. The park covers a total area of 73 hectares. There is also a beautiful legend about the origin of Sheyang Island. In ancient times, there were ten suns in the sky, causing all things to wither and living beings to suffer. A divine archer named Houyi decided to rid the people of this calamity. Setting out from the shores of the East China Sea, he drew his bow and loosed three arrows — “whoosh, whoosh, whoosh” — shooting down three suns. Two fell into the water, while another wobbled before dropping and forming Sheyang Island. Ever since, on sunny, breezy days when the setting sun casts its glow, you can see three suns: one in the sky,

and two in the water. This forms the unique “Three Suns Guarding the Tripod” landscape. Sheyang Island Park was designed and planned in 1993 by the Wuxi Planning Institute, with a total investment of 7.5 million US dollars. It has now taken initial shape. Major attractions in the park include the memorial archway, Plum Blossom Hill, Osmanthus Hill, Peony Garden, Zigzag Bridge, amusement park, fishing center, peacock garden, ostrich garden, and monkey garden. During sunny, flower-scented seasons, the air in the park is filled with the refreshing fragrance of plum and osmanthus blossoms. Strolling through this ocean of flowers and kingdom of birds, listening to the beautiful legend of “Houyi Shooting the Suns” and beholding the unique spectacle of the “Three Suns Guarding the Tripod” is truly a delightful experience.

Once completed, Sheyang Island Park will feature six functional areas: the Youth Activity Zone, which mainly includes an inline skating rink, swimming pool, and children’s playground; the Cultural and Entertainment Zone, featuring an amusement park, comprehensive activity room, and lake boating; the Water Activity Center, which has a central building and offers activities such as water parachuting, windsurfing, and speedboat rides; the Seniors’ Zone, equipped with calligraphy, reading, chess, tea tasting rooms, and a gateball court for indoor and light outdoor activities; the Fishing Club, with a fishing center that hosts fishing competitions and other events; and the Quiet Leisure Zone.
