Hundred People Cave

Hundred People Cave is located at the border between the fourth and seventh communities of Fenghuangmiao Village. Since the cave wall is engraved with the characters “Xianfeng Tenth Year,” it is estimated that Hundred People Cave was built during the Xianfeng era. The cave is carved directly into a sheer cliff face, which consists of one massive monolithic rock. The cave is approximately one hundred meters from the top of the cliff and about two hundred meters from the base. The cliff face forms a 90-degree angle, and on the right side, a passage has been chiseled out to allow access for people entering the cave.

Hundred People Cave in Fenghuangmiao Village, Enyang District

The entrance of Hundred People Cave is 1.8 meters high and about 1.5 meters wide. Inside the cave, there are complete facilities including a bedroom, toilet, kitchen, and stove, capable of supporting the living needs of a hundred people.

Regarding the reason for building Hundred People Cave, local folklore says that during the Xianfeng Emperor’s reign, war was rampant, bandits were widespread, local gentry were oppressive, and people suffered greatly. The populace hoped to find a safe place to survive. Under the historical circumstances of the time, this location was considered an ideal refuge, so they built the cave here. Later generations, seeing this remarkable feat, named it “Hundred People Cave.”

Hundred People Cave in Fenghuangmiao Village, Enyang District

During the era of collective production, the cadres and residents of the fourth community of Fenghuangmiao hoped to make full use of Hundred People Cave. They therefore widened and heightened the entrance passage to make entry and exit more convenient, and stored harvested sweet potatoes inside the cave with remarkably good results. However, nowadays the cave has largely been abandoned and is no longer visited by anyone.
