The Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium & Lu Xun Park Joint Development Group consists of Hongkou Football Stadium and Lu Xun Park. The predecessor of Hongkou Football Stadium was the renowned Hongkou Stadium, which enjoyed a glorious 46-year history nationwide and was the first stadium in China to host international competitions. The football stadium was completed on February 20, 1999, becoming China's first standard professional football stadium and remains the only one of its kind in the country. It serves as the home ground for the Shanghai Shenhua team in the Chinese Football Association Super League and has been recognized by the Chinese Football Association as an outstanding football field and stadium in the 2000 Chinese Football League season.

Hongkou Football Stadium is adjacent to Lu Xun Park to the east and connected to the East Station of Line 3 (Pearl Line) of the elevated light rail to the west. Nestled among green trees, it blends seamlessly with the elegant cultural environment around it. Lu Xun Park is a renowned commemorative cultural and leisure venue with a century-long history and a wealth of natural and cultural landscapes.

Covering an area of 56,000 square meters with a floor space of 72,000 square meters, Hongkou Football Stadium is the first and one of Asia’s top-tier professional football stadiums in China. The reconstruction project underwent an international design competition and was planned by Japan’s RIA Design Institute, with detailed designs and construction plans handled by the Shanghai Architectural Design & Research Institute. The stadium features a massive integrated structure without expansion or settlement joints, with overall design considerations for temperature stress and structural deformation. The natural grass pitch utilizes advanced overseas turf maintenance technologies and equipment such as underground heating and intensive drainage irrigation systems. The large oval opening at the top of the stadium maximizes sunlight exposure for the pitch while maintaining air circulation. The rational architectural structure and flexible spatial design ensure unobstructed sightlines for spectators. Additionally, Hongkou Football Stadium is capable of hosting not only high-level international and domestic football matches but also large-scale performance events.
