Fanggua Lane

Fanggua Lane is located at No. 997 Qiujiang Road, Hongkou District, Shanghai. When people mention "Fanggua Lane," they often think of it as a microcosm of the shantytown dwellings in old Shanghai. In fact, during the 1920s, it was a bustling area in the southwestern part of Zhabei. The Fanggua Lane site was originally a low-lying area formed by the silting of the Wusong River in the mid-Ming Dynasty, when this area was a reed marsh. By the mid-Qing Dynasty, migrants from the Jianghuai region and flood-stricken areas began to settle here and reclaim the land, gradually forming the Mei Yuantou area. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Zhabei area served as a key overland link between Jiading, Taicang, Baoshan counties, and Shanghai County.
