Shangzhi Martyrs' Cemetery

Shangzhi Martyrs' Cemetery is a cultural relic protection unit of Heilongjiang Province, a classic red tourism destination, and a base for patriotic education and national defense education.

The city of Shangzhi in Heilongjiang Province was formerly known as Zhuhe County. In 1946, it was renamed Shangzhi County in honor of Zhao Shangzhi, a national hero of the Anti-Japanese resistance, and became Shangzhi City in 1988 after the county was abolished.

Shangzhi is the birthplace of the Third Division of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army and served as a base for anti-Japanese guerrilla warfare. Under Zhao Shangzhi’s leadership, the Third Division fought fiercely against Japanese invaders across the region of Heilongjiang, delivering heavy blows to the enemy. Zhao Yiman served as the political commissar of the Second Regiment of the Third Division. Both Zhao Shangzhi and Zhao Yiman were eventually killed by the enemy.

To commemorate the heroic deeds of revolutionary martyrs such as Zhao Shangzhi and Zhao Yiman, Shangzhi City constructed the Shangzhi Martyrs' Cemetery with the approval of then-Premier Zhou Enlai in 1965. The cemetery was completed and opened to the public in 1986.

Shangzhi Martyrs' Cemetery is located at No. 178, Beihuan Road, Shangzhi City, covering an area of 32,000 square meters. Within the cemetery are the "Zhuhe Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Monument," the Martyrs’ Monument, and over 100 memorial steles inscribed with messages from Party and state leaders as well as descendants of the martyrs. The site also hosts the "Shangzhi Anti-Japanese Martyrs Memorial Hall," which has a construction area of 1,250 square meters. The memorial hall primarily displays the stories of revolutionary martyrs such as Zhao Shangzhi and Zhao Yiman. It also features a diorama depicting Zhao Shangzhi leading guerrillas in attacking Binxian with a wooden cannon, offering visitors an immersive experience.

Shangzhi Martyrs' Cemetery is a patriotic education base and a national defense education base in Heilongjiang Province. In August 2005, it was further approved as one of the designated projects for the national “Red Tourism” development initiative.
