Shangzhi Puzhao Temple

Shangzhi Puzhao Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Puzhao Temple is situated on Foguang Mountain in Yimianpo, Shangzhi City, Heilongjiang Province. It was initiated by Master Huguo Fayu Chan and local gentry, with construction starting in the first year of the puppet Datong era (1932) and completed in the fifth year of the puppet Kangde era (1936). The temple complex is grand in scale, with magnificent halls, solemn and diverse colored sculptures in various poses and expressions, all remarkably lifelike. Especially noteworthy are the numerous murals that adorn the temple walls, adding to its majestic presence.

Along with Harbin's "Jile Temple" and Yingkou's "Lengyan Temple," Puzhao Temple was known as one of the Three Great Temples of the Northeast. During the Cultural Revolution, the temple suffered greatly—its Buddha statues were all destroyed and its monks were dispersed. The 44th Patriarch of the Tiantai School, Master Xuyu, once resided here. After the completion of Puzhao Temple, Master Luguang from Jile Temple was appointed as its first abbot. Later, Master Luguang was transferred, and Master Dingseng became the second abbot, followed by Master Purui (third), Master Chengyi (fourth), Master Shenxin (fifth), and Master Baosheng (sixth).

Now, due to ripe conditions, with the approval of the government and the Religious Affairs Bureau, the foundation stone was laid on May 16, 2004, to commence the construction of the temple’s main structure—the Mahavira Hall. The project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2004. This undertaking requires substantial human, material, and financial resources. We hope that fellow Buddhists and members of the community will generously contribute. As the saying goes, “Creating blessings is foremost on the path to heaven, and giving alms is foremost in the forest of merit.” On the occasion of the Mahavira Hall’s groundbreaking, such an opportunity is rare. We invite eminent monks and nuns, as well as devoted laypeople from home and abroad, to cultivate bodhicitta and sow fields of merit. On the day the hall is completed, your names will be forever engraved on the merit stele, and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will forever bless you with peace and good fortune. The completion of Puzhao Temple will bring significant benefits both politically and economically to everyone.

Transportation: Take a bus from Harbin to Shangzhi City, then transfer to a minibus or taxi to Yimianpo Town.

Self-driving Route: From Harbin, take the Suiman Expressway, drive 141.3 km, then exit at Yimianpo. Enter X153 Road and drive 170 meters, then continue straight onto the Suiman Highway and drive 1.1 km. Turn right and drive 750 meters to reach the destination.
