Heilongjiang Art Museum

Heilongjiang Art Museum is situated at No. 133 Duanjie Street, Daoli District, Harbin, next to the renowned Saint Sophia Cathedral. The three-story structure covers a built-up area of 3,000 m² and was built in 1912, showcasing a classic 19th-century European architectural style. It was recognized as a Class I protected provincial building in 1986. Heilongjiang Art Museum is a museum of plastic arts, serving as a permanent national art institution with multiple functions including collecting fine artworks, organizing academic research, providing aesthetic education, and conducting international cultural exchanges.

Established in 1962, it is one of the earlier provincial art museums founded after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China and the only public welfare official museum of plastic arts in Heilongjiang Province. The museum site is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit and a Class I protected building.

With a floor area of 3,000 square meters, Heilongjiang Art Museum has two exhibition halls and an exhibition line stretching 220 linear meters. Its collection includes over 4,000 pieces, featuring Heilongjiang prints—especially those from the Beidahuang printmaking school—as well as contemporary Russian oil paintings.

Since its founding, Heilongjiang Art Museum has successfully hosted and organized dozens of major art events, including national-level activities, and has engaged frequently in international artistic exchanges. Especially since its 45th anniversary in 2007, leveraging its regional and cultural characteristics, the museum has actively built diverse social interaction platforms and formed volunteer teams. It has held numerous exhibitions such as Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibitions, Chinese Contemporary Printmaking Exhibitions, national touring exhibitions of its collections, international art invitation exhibitions, international art exchange exhibitions, and various academic seminars. Based on regional aesthetic research, the museum strives to broaden its channels for exhibitions, collections, public aesthetic education, and exchange promotion, while also giving substantial cultural attention and theoretical exploration to the development of contemporary art in Heilongjiang, China, and internationally.
