Harbin New Synagogue

The Harbin New Synagogue was built in 1918, covering an area of 2,400 square meters, and is the largest synagogue in China. In 2006, to preserve historical and cultural heritage, the synagogue underwent renovation. It now houses the “Harbin Jewish History and Culture Exhibition,” which showcases the production and living conditions of Jews in Harbin in the mid-20th century.

The Harbin New Synagogue was first constructed in September 1918 and completed in 1921. Its main color scheme of red and white is elegant and dignified. The current building covers an area of 2,673 square meters, has two floors, and can accommodate up to 500 people for worship services. The main entrance (located on Jingwei Street) features a three-door design, with four pillars on the protruding section supporting a pointed arch high door. This not only highlights the entrance but also enhances the sense of depth, while allowing for strong light and shadow effects. The left and right walls each have double-layered pointed arch wooden windows.

On the upper level of the rear entrance of the synagogue are three sets of six pointed arch wooden windows, while the lower level has a pointed arch entrance in the center, flanked by wooden windows. Although the wooden windows lack the intricate decorations of the old synagogue, they remain simple and elegant, with each window adorned with the distinctive six-pointed Star of David found in Jewish architecture.
