Harbin Science Palace

Harbin Science Palace serves as a base for science education and outreach.

Harbin Science Palace is a Russian-style building that originally served as the Jewish Overseas Business Association Hall. Constructed in 1902, it has a history of over 100 years and is a Class II protected national building. In 1963, it was converted into the Harbin Science Palace.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the Science Palace was a popular venue for science, technology, culture, and entertainment among the residents of Harbin. It also served as an important hub for the city’s scientific and technological development. Many national, provincial, and municipal scientific conferences, academic seminars, and technology exchange events were held here. Renowned Chinese mathematician Hua Luogeng, as well as scientists Qian Xuesen and Zhou Guangzhao, all visited the Science Palace to share academic achievements and offer guidance.

In August 2006, after a complete renovation, the Science Palace reopened to the public. The reopened Harbin Science Palace features 4,000 square meters dedicated to science education exhibitions. Its exhibits and activity areas are primarily designed for children under 12 years old and can accommodate over 200 children at a time for science-related activities, exploration, and play.

In the renovated Science Palace, attractions such as the play pit, frog hopper, rock climbing wall, dominoes, construction site zone, computer multimedia studio, robotics lab, forest internet café, space chair, glider, tornado simulator, and car driving simulator allow children to interact directly with each exhibit and hands-on facility, experiencing the wonders of science firsthand.

The Science Palace also houses Heilongjiang Province’s only youth workshop. Here, children have access to a full set of small-scale machine tools such as lathes, drills, and saws. Kids can operate these tools themselves to engage in crafting and production activities, helping to develop creativity and hands-on skills. Additionally, a model of the re-entry capsule from the Shenzhou-5 spacecraft, which traveled into space and returned to Earth, is on display at the Harbin Science Palace.
