Dongshan Lake Scenic Area

Dongshan Lake is located 0.5 kilometers east of Xunke County and covers approximately 60 hectares of natural water surface, separated from the Heilongjiang River by only a dike. The central island of Dongshan Lake spans nearly 3,000 square meters and is covered with various flowers and plants, including mountain ash, bird cherry, crabapple, and wild rose. There are also two smaller islands nearby, both with lush vegetation and beautiful surroundings in summer, featuring shady trees and a pleasant environment. In the middle of the lake stands a prominent structure — the “Yanling Pavilion.” On either side of the pavilion are inscriptions that read: “Green waters flow around, extending human life; towering green mountains inspire lofty aspirations.” These couplets carry a dual meaning: first, to commemorate Gu Yanling, the first county magistrate of Xunke who sacrificed his life fighting bandits after the liberation of Xunke in 1946; and second, to encourage the living to live longer and contribute more to society.

Directly south of Dongshan Lake lies the provincial-level forest park within Xunke, covering an area of 800 hectares. The park features a variety of tree species, rich vegetation, and the distinctive azalea blossoms. It also has grape valleys and wild blueberry marshes suitable for fruit wine production, as well as tall, upright pine trees, all of which vividly showcase the beauty of nature. Walking through the fresh air of the forest invigorates both the mind and body. To the east of the lake is Dongshan Mountain, which rises over 200 meters above sea level. The mountain contains remnants of military facilities built by Japanese invaders during their occupation, including more than ten large reinforced concrete tunnels. These tunnels house hidden bunkers, traps, storage rooms, and barracks, with one tunnel leading directly to a mountaintop artillery position that once aimed at Russia’s Polyakov. Trenches are also visible along the mountainside slopes, all remarkably well-preserved to this day. This area serves as an important base for visitors to explore and receive patriotic education, constantly reminding us not to forget that part of history. To the north lies the Russian town of Polyakov in the Mikhailovsky District, just across the river.

Visiting Dongshan Lake allows you to explore the islands, admire the scenery, pick wild fruits, swim, have picnics, and fish. You can also visit the forest park to fully enjoy the beautiful views of Dongshan Lake, take in the splendor of nature, and experience a taste of foreign culture. During the day, the lake is bustling with visitors, while at night it comes alive with bright lights and neon glows, making it a city that never sleeps. It is an excellent destination for summer retreats and leisure activities.
