Dawn River Scenic Belt

The Dawn River is located on the eastern side of Saertu District in Daqing City, adjacent to Dawn Lake to the east and Jiu Street to the west. The river runs through the entire eastern urban area and eventually flows into the Longfeng Wetland.

The Dawn River, a scenic corridor with profound cultural heritage, has gradually taken shape. In addition to presenting the beauty of water to the 100,000 residents along its banks, it has also become a key waterfront greenway axis cutting through the eastern urban area. Today, the Dawn River also connects Dawn Lake and Land Lake, enabling navigable waterways between the two, spanning a total length of 7 kilometers. As the first waterway within Daqing’s urban water area, it holds unique significance in tourism, culture, and ecology, reflecting the city’s humanistic approach to urban development and ushering in a new chapter for Daqing’s water culture.

The Dawn River is an artificial waterway, stretching 13.47 kilometers in length with an average depth of about 1.3 meters. Its predecessor was known as the “East Second Drainage Channel,” excavated by the Daqing Oilfield in the late 1980s as a sewage outlet. It primarily discharged industrial wastewater from the Third and Sixth Oil Production Plants, as well as domestic sewage from upstream residential areas. In recent years, in addition to the large volume of industrial and domestic waste being dumped into it, the slow flow of diverted water from the Nenjiang River and other factors turned the once clear Dawn River into a foul-smelling ditch.

Although the Dawn River underwent annual dredging and management, the water remained turbid with deep sediment, especially in summer when the river emitted a strong unpleasant odor, greatly detracting from its scenic appeal.

After a major renovation in 2009 involving substantial investment, it has become a beautiful urban landmark in Daqing.
