Yuanhai Temple, known as the "First Temple of the Three Rivers," is one of the largest Buddhist temples in Heilongjiang Province. With its classic and elegant yet grand architectural style, the temple is nestled among rolling mountains and embraced by crystal-clear streams. Here, “buildings blend seamlessly with the landscape, while temple bells and drums harmonize with the rustling of pine trees.” The architectural complex and the natural scenery complement each other beautifully.

Approved for construction by the Heilongjiang Provincial Religious Affairs Bureau in 2001, Yuanhai Temple covers a total area of 30,000 square meters and is one of the larger nunneries in Northeast China. Located within the primitive forest of the Daliangzi River in Tangyuan County, Heilongjiang Province, the temple is surrounded by mountains and towering pines. Six peaks resemble lotus petals encircling the temple, perfectly integrating it with the landscape where “buildings blend seamlessly with the landscape, while temple bells and drums harmonize with the rustling of pine trees.” In summer, the lush green forests sway with leaves, accompanied by birdsong, floral fragrance, and fluttering butterflies; in winter, the area is blanketed in snow, presenting the distinctive beauty of northern China.

Characterized by its classical Chinese architectural style, Yuanhai Temple is both classic and elegant, as well as majestic and grand. After crossing the stone arch bridge that spans the gently flowing “Baihua Ganluquan River” from east to west, visitors are greeted by the imposing and solemn mountain gate and the fluttering Five-Star Red Flag. Upon entering the gate lies the Lotus Platform, with a statue of Amitabha Buddha holding a lotus in his hands enshrined at the center. Distinctive landmark structures include the Maitreya Treasure Hall, the Ten Thousand Buddhas Hall, the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower, the Manjushri Hall, the Samantabhadra Hall, and the Chanting Hall. The Chanting Hall is shaped like a sailing ship setting out to sea; the Ten Thousand Buddhas Hall houses a 10-meter-tall Vairocana Buddha at its center, surrounded by 11,100 smaller Buddha statues, with the floor made up of 999 glass lotuses—truly a sacred space of glass ground, radiant Buddhas, and divine serenity.

Through the dedicated efforts of monastics and devotees, Yuanhai Temple has become a sacred site that integrates classical Chinese culture, temple heritage, and modern civilization. Here, the Buddha statues are solemn, the sacred grounds are pure, the rituals are dignified, and the learning atmosphere is sincere. Morning bells and evening drums mark the daily rhythm, with morning and evening worship, chanting, scripture recitation, communal meals, walking meditation, and meditation retreats. Being here allows one to fully appreciate the profound richness of Buddhist culture and the harmony of mountain and forest scenery. It is not only an ideal place for monastics and practitioners to study the Dharma, but also a spiritual home for the broader devotee community. The achievements of Yuanhai Temple today are the collective aspiration of countless believers; the crystallization of their virtuous wishes; the ocean of merit formed by their compassionate thoughts; and the manifestation of the aspirations of the bodhisattvas.
