Tangyuan County Anti-Japanese Allied Forces Relics
The Anti-Japanese Allied Forces relics are located in the eastern part of the Daliangzihe Park. Famous anti-Japanese generals such as Zhao Shangzhi, Li Zhaolin, Feng Zhongyun, Xia Yunjie, and Chen Lei once fought and lived here. This was the site of the headquarters of the Sixth Army of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Forces, as well as the main rest, logistics supply, and training base for the Third and Sixth Armies.
In July 1979, workers at the Liangzihe Forest Farm in Tangyuan County discovered the ruins of an armament repair workshop belonging to the Sixth Army of the Anti-Japanese Allied Forces. These ruins were distributed on a ridge southeast of a mountain spring and included two house foundations (originally log cabins), one in the north and one in the south. In November 1987, during forestry operations in the southeastern part of the Liangzihe Forest Farm, the ruins of the Sixth Army headquarters were found, covering an area of 1,500 square meters. The site included the Anti-Japanese Allied Forces military-political cadres school, a hospital, and a military training ground. In 2004, in Jixinggou, 2 kilometers south of the Lüye Xianzhou Resort and southwest of the Tuanjie Forest Farm in Tangyuan County, the site of the Expanded Meeting of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Military-Political Conference was identified.
In the spring of 1936, the Sixth Army of the Anti-Japanese Allied Forces was established. Starting in the autumn of 1936, several secret camps were created in the Liangzihe Valley of Tangyuan. The Liangzihe Secret Camp included this armament repair workshop, a garment factory, and two small hospitals (one for soldiers and one for cadres). After their establishment, these secret camps played a significant role in manufacturing weapons for the Anti-Japanese Allied Forces troops, treating the wounded, training cadres and soldiers, repairing garments, and providing supplies. The Political-Military School of the Northeast People's Anti-Japanese Allied Forces (later renamed the Political-Military School of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Forces) was headed by Zhao Shangzhi as principal, with Zhang Shouyi and Hou Qigang serving successively as educational directors. Lei Yan, Zhang De, Wang Yusheng, and Zhang Wenlian served successively as political and military instructors. The Sixth Army Garment Factory: In 1935, the Tangyuan Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Unit grew and developed into the Sixth Army of the Northeast People’s Revolutionary Army. In the summer of 1935, after taking down a major local landlord in Tangyuan County, they seized a large quantity of white cloth and two sewing machines. Comrades such as Pei Chengchun, Li Zaide, and Li Guilan then established the Sixth Army garment factory of the Anti-Japanese Allied Forces. At that time, none of them knew how to sew clothes, so a local organization sent an elderly tailor who supported the resistance to the secret camp to teach them how to use the sewing machines and make garments. They boiled tree bark and mugwort to dye the white cloth into a yellowish-green hue and began making clothes for the troops. For the design of the uniforms, Pei Chengchun consulted with Sixth Army leaders Xia Yunjie, Feng Zhongyun, and Zhang Renqiu. Since Feng Zhongyun came from the south, he described the clothing worn by the Red Army workers and peasants. Based on the soldiers’ preference for riding breeches and Feng Zhongyun’s description, Pei Chengchun designed the military uniforms. Soon after, Feng Zhongyun came to the secret camp garment factory to convey the opinions and instructions of the Manchurian Provincial Committee regarding the production of military uniforms, and the uniform style was finalized. From then on, the Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Forces had their own military uniforms. Despite the harsh conditions and environment at the time, they continued to produce uniforms for the troops until the army’s westward expedition in 1939. Site of the Flag-Giving Ceremony for the Sixth Army of the Northeast People's Revolutionary Army: After years of guerrilla warfare, the Tangyuan People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps had opened up the Tangluosui Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Zone and established the Taipingchuan Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Base. In January 1936, it was expanded into the Sixth Army of the Northeast People’s Revolutionary Army. Xia Yunjie served as the army commander, and Zhang Shouyi (also known as Li Zhaolin) acted as the political director. The army headquarters commanded four regiments: the First Regiment led by Captain Wang Xiuzhi; the Second Regiment led by Captain Dai Hongbin, with Political Director Pei Jingtian; the Third Regiment led by Captain Feng Zhigang, with Political Director Zhou Yunfeng; and the Fourth Regiment led by Captain Zhang Chuanfu, with acting Political Director Xu Wenbin. Each regiment had two to four companies, and each company had two to three squads. The army headquarters directly commanded a security company, with Company Commander Zhu XX (later replaced by Li Fenglin). In the early stages of its formation, the army had nearly a thousand members, operating primarily in seven counties: Tangyuan, Luobei, Suibin, Tonghe, Yilan, Huachuan, and Fujin. On January 30, 1936, the flag-giving ceremony for the Sixth Army of the Northeast People’s Revolutionary Army was grandly held in Wentun Village, Taipingchuan, Tangyuan County. Zhang Shouyi (Li Zhaolin), representing the headquarters of the Anti-Japanese Allied Forces and the General Political Department, presented the army flag in front of all the officers and soldiers and read the “Declaration of the Founding of the Sixth Army of the Northeast People’s Revolutionary Army,” solemnly declaring: “The people of the Northeast, oppressed by Japanese imperialism for over four years, have not yielded under enslavement nor resigned themselves to being slaves. Instead, they have ignited a wave of anti-Japanese and anti-Manchu resistance across the Northeast…” He concluded by stating: “The Tangyuan People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps will fight to the end to achieve the liberation of the people of all ethnic groups in the Northeast and reclaim lost territory!” Thus, following the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Armies of the Northeast People’s Revolutionary Army, the Sixth Army was established.
