Xidaquan Forest Park

Xidaquan Forest Park is located in the southwestern part of Boli County, 25 kilometers from the county seat. Established in 2003, the park covers an area of 9,200 hectares. It was rated as a provincial-level forest park in 1992, a national-level forest park in August 2003, and a National AA-level forest park in 2005. The Xidaquan primitive forest has been designated as a prefectural-level nature reserve.

Xidaquan boasts abundant tourism resources and outstanding natural ecological features. Part of the main range of the Wanda Mountain’s Laoyeling Ridge, the area has complex terrain, dense forests, and steep mountains. Its highest peak, Duanjialing, stands at 1,008 meters above sea level. The mountain features mixed natural forests with various tree species and pristine ecological woodlands. Its valleys include marsh wetlands, primary zonal vegetation, the continuously flowing Wusuhun River, unique wild blue honeysuckle berries, hundreds of varieties of medicinal herbs, over 80 species of wildlife, as well as little-known remnants of anti-Japanese guerrilla camps and hideouts used by the bandit leader Xie Wendong. Between 100–200 meters in elevation, you’ll find swamp vegetation, meadow plants, and steppe flora; from 240–380 meters, birch forests and broadleaf mixed woods; from 380–600 meters, poplar-birch and broadleaf mixed forests; from 600–800 meters, oak and mixed coniferous-broadleaf forests; and above 800 meters along the mountain ridges, you’ll encounter coniferous mixed forests dominated by Korean pine, spruce, and fir, along with primary zonal vegetation.

Xidaquan is divided into five major scenic areas with 58 attractions. The first is the Hong Canyon Rafting Area, a 5-kilometer stretch where the valley is wide open, the waters crystal-clear, and the surrounding scenery stunning and pleasant—the rafting experience here is one of Xidaquan’s top highlights. The second is the Wolong Peak Hiking Area, where the ridge is formed by towering rocks resembling a dragon lying on the mountain, hence the name “Crouching Dragon Peak.” The peak stretches about 800 meters and sits at an elevation of 676 meters, featuring two natural caves at the summit and a “One Line Sky” crevice among other sights. The mountain offers beautiful views in all seasons: blooming wildflowers in spring, cool breezes through lush forests in summer, colorful foliage in autumn’s “mountain of ten thousand colors,” and snow-covered trees like silver flowers in winter. The third is the Primitive Ecological Forest Area, where visitors can view thousand-year-old pines, explore pristine forest landscapes, and marvel at nature’s wonders. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife and wild vegetables, while the rivers hold wild fine-scaled fish. The fourth is the Water Park Area, spanning over 40,000 square meters and featuring small boats and yachts, alpine stone caves, arched bridges over flowing water, pavilions, corridors, and a variety of recreational facilities. The fifth is the Stream Garden and Yunwu Mountain Villa Service Area, where visitors can enjoy wild delicacies and game, drink natural mineral water from the streams, fish in ponds and sing amid the woods, stay in forest cabins or riverside lodges—beauty lies in the mountains, joy in the woods, offering endless delight.

Xidaquan Forest Park not only offers rich natural landscapes but also boasts a wealth of historical and cultural attractions. It records many unforgettable years of turbulent history, encapsulating the struggles and suffering of the Chinese nation during the bloody years of the Anti-Japanese War. Here you can find stark evidence of Japanese invaders plundering local resources, such as logging stumps, fallen timber, and the ruins of the Liuhao Dam. There are also remnants of resistance efforts led by Zhou Baozhong, a general of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army, including armed resistance sites established by lumber workers against Japanese aggression, ruins of the Anti-Japanese United Army’s uniform factory, and the West Square of Hongxing Forest Farm—the site where Japanese puppet troops surrendered.

Xidaquan Forest Park enjoys very convenient transportation. The Mudanjiang–Jiamusi Railway passes through Boli County, and highways such as National Highway 201 and Provincial Road 308 run throughout the county. Communication within the park’s various scenic areas is also convenient, with full mobile and Unicom network coverage.
