Tanhu Town is situated in the northeastern part of Zhenlai, Jilin Province, at the junction of Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, and Jilin provinces, as well as three county-level banners. It lies 45 kilometers from the county seat. Its geographic coordinates are between 123°15′–123°33′45″ east longitude and 46°15′–46°7′30″ north latitude. The Pingqi Railway runs through the town, while the Qi-Shuang Highway, Tan-Ga Highway, Tan-Ha Highway, and Tan-Bao Highway all converge here. In 1997, it became the first town in the province to achieve asphalt road access to every village.
