History:

The museum was established in 1993. It originated from the Cultural Relics Management Office founded in 1998. Currently, it operates under one structure with two names, also taking on the responsibilities of the Tumen City Cultural Relics Management Office. It is a public institution (legal entity) affiliated with the Tumen City Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Press and Publication. The museum has a staff quota of 12 people and includes five departments: Archaeology, Modern History, Folklore, Social Education, and Conservation. It currently houses 683 cultural relics in its collection, most of which are stone tools, pottery, Korean ethnic folklore items, and revolutionary memorabilia.

The Tumen City Museum fully leverages the functions and roles of a museum by actively organizing various exhibitions and promotional activities. It serves as a window for citizens and tourists to understand the city’s history and appreciate its glory. The museum currently features two permanent exhibitions: “Ancient Charm of the Eastern Frontier – Exhibition of Ancient Cultural Relics in Tumen City” and “Exhibition of Korean Ethnic Folk Cultural Relics.” Temporary exhibitions have included: “100th Anniversary of Mao Zedong’s Birth Photo Exhibition” (1994), “Red Crag Spirit Photo Exhibition” (1998), “100-Year History of Tumen Port Photo Exhibition” (2013), “Yanbian Railway Large-Scale Photo Exhibition” (2014), “Blood and Soul – History of Yanbian’s Anti-Japanese Struggle” Photo Exhibition (2015), “Cultural Landscapes of Tumen City – Special Exhibition for International Museum Day on May 18” (2016), and “Korean Ethnic Ritual Culture – Special Exhibition on Intangible Cultural Heritage of Chinese Koreans.” Since opening to the public for free in October 2008, the number of domestic and international visitors has increased year by year. The museum also provides a rich second classroom for young people, achieving significant social benefits.

The Tumen City Museum is not only an educational service institution but also a cultural relics enforcement agency. It adheres to the guiding principles of cultural relics work: “Protection first, rescue foremost, rational utilization, and strengthened management.” It is responsible for managing 1 national key cultural relics protection unit, 6 provincial-level key cultural relics protection units, 6 prefectural-level key cultural relics protection units, 13 municipal-level key cultural relics protection units, and nearly 100 heritage sites, protecting them from damage.
