Dalian Xinghai Bay Bridge

The Dalian Southern Coastal Avenue Cross-sea Bridge has a total length of approximately 6 kilometers, with a main bridge span of 820 meters — including a main span of 460 meters and side spans of 180 meters on each side. It is the longest cross-sea bridge project in Northeast China and China’s first offshore ground-anchored suspension cross-sea bridge. The bridge starts from Jinshan Mountain on the eastern side of Golden Beach in Dalian and extends westward across Xinghai Bay, landing in the reclaimed area of the High-Tech Industrial Zone. Once completed, it will become a key east-west route within Dalian’s “seven verticals and seven horizontals” road network.

The design, experimentation, monitoring, and post-completion testing of the Xinghai Bay Cross-sea Bridge were all undertaken by Professor Zhang Zhe’s team from Dalian University of Technology. Under the design philosophy of “innovation and structural rationality,” the team took full account of both the functionality and aesthetics of the bridge. The design process took over two years and involved more than ten types of tests, including fatigue, overall structure, wind tunnel, and anchoring tests. Over 20 technical challenges were overcome and innovative technologies were introduced. The bridge is designed to withstand typhoons of up to Category 12 and earthquakes measuring 7 on the Richter scale, with an expected lifespan of 100 years. Among its innovations, the anchor uses pre-filled aggregate grouting foundation technology, with the anchor caisson weighing 26,000 tons — the heaviest in China. The steel truss girder employs integrated node plate technology; in bedrock areas, steel pipe piles are installed using vibratory ring cutting and rock-socketed anchor pile techniques; and the hoisting of super-heavy tonnage steel truss girders is also an innovation pioneered in China.
