Former Site of Dalian Shahekou Water Purification Plant

The Former Site of Dalian Shahekou Water Purification Plant is a cultural heritage site protected by Liaoning Province.

The Shahekou Water Purification Plant is located at No. 95, Wuyi Road, Shahekou District, and was built in 1917. The "Rapid Filtration Room" building complex consists of a central section with one floor and seven rooms on each side, flanked by two-story sections each with ten rooms, covering a construction area of over 500 square meters and a total site area of 129,000 square meters. Its initial water purification capacity was 15,000 cubic meters per day. After expansion in 1932, the purification capacity increased to 35,000 cubic meters per day.

On August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered. On August 22, the Soviet Red Army entered Dalian, disarmed the Japanese troops, and implemented military control. On August 26, Colonel Dubchenko of the Soviet Army led his troops to officially take over the reservoirs and water purification plants in downtown Dalian, including the Shahekou Water Purification Plant.

In April 1946, the Sino-Soviet Joint Management Committee for the Liaodong Peninsula was established, under which the Liaodong Peninsula Waterworks Administration was formed. The director was Soviet Colonel Dubchenko, and the deputy director was Hu Jiaren. In January 1951, the Soviet Army handed over the water supply system to the Chinese local government. The Waterworks Bureau was separated from the Far East Power Company to form the Lüda Waterworks Company, which was under the Public Utilities Bureau of the Lüda Municipal People's Government. The Shahekou Water Purification Plant was placed under the Dalian Waterworks Branch.

From 1962 to 1978, the purification capacity was increased to 70,000 cubic meters per day. During the first phase of the Bili-to-Dalian Water Diversion Project in 1981, a second purification system was added at the Shahekou Water Purification Plant, increasing the capacity to 160,000 cubic meters per day. Between 1988 and 1990, the capacity further rose to 190,000 cubic meters per day.

In October 1999, after the official launch of the Dalian Urban Water Supply System Renovation Project, the Shahekou Water Purification Plant underwent redevelopment and reconstruction. The original production system was decommissioned, and a new modern water plant with a purification capacity of 400,000 cubic meters per day was built on the original site, completing and commencing operations in 2003.

On March 15, 2011, the former filtration room of the Shahekou Water Purification Plant was listed as one of the third batch of key protected buildings in Dalian.
