The Battle of Lushunkou was a land engagement during the Russo-Japanese War. In an attempt to capture the home port of the Russian Pacific Fleet, the Japanese Army surrounded it and eventually took control of Lushunkou on the Liaodong Peninsula, then under Qing China. The battle lasted five months in total, making it the longest-lasting engagement of the entire Russo-Japanese War.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Lushun Naval Port was widely regarded as the foremost fortress in the Far East. The Qing government initially built fortifications and artillery positions at Lushunkou as a maintenance base for the Beiyang Fleet. During the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894, Japanese forces captured Lushunkou within just a few days and at minimal cost. However, during the Russo-Japanese War, inadequate preparation by the Japanese General Staff regarding the difficulty of the battle led to heavy casualties among Japanese troops.

The Battle of Lushunkou was also the world’s first large-scale modern siege of a fortified position and is considered a precursor to the trench warfare seen a decade later in World War I. Both sides deployed a wide array of advanced weaponry, including 28 cm heavy howitzers, rapid-fire guns, Maxim machine guns, mortars, hand grenades, and radio equipment. The defending forces constructed a formidable network of fortifications consisting of barbed wire, machine gun emplacements, and artillery positions, which initially held off the attackers and inflicted heavy losses on the assaulting Japanese infantry.
