Former Site of the Dairen Yamato Hotel

The former site of the Dairen Yamato Hotel is a cultural relic protection unit of Liaoning Province.

The former site of the Dairen Yamato Hotel is located at No. 30 Wenhua Street, Lushunkou District, Dalian (known as Block 1, Nakamura-cho during the Japanese puppet regime, now the northwest corner of the intersection of Wenhua Street and Zhongyang Street). Built in 1903, it is a two-and-a-half-story Russian-style building with a construction area of 3,796 square meters and a land area of 1,066 square meters. It was originally the residence of Ji Fengtai, a Chinese national of Russian descent, with living quarters upstairs and shops downstairs. In 1906, the Japanese converted the building into the “Yamato Hotel,” which was directly operated by the Japanese South Manchuria Railway Company (“Mantetsu”), and carried out renovations. The Dairen Yamato Hotel opened in 1907, offering 14 guest rooms, including single and double rooms in both European and American styles. Renovations to the building were completed in March 1908. In 1927, the Japanese-born Jin Bihui (also known as Kawashima Yoshiko) and Mongolian prince Ganburjab held their wedding at the Dairen Yamato Hotel. On November 20, 1931, the Japanese transferred the deposed Emperor Puyi from Tianjin to Dalian, where he stayed on the second floor of the Yamato Hotel for about a month and reached an agreement with the Japanese to establish the puppet state of Manchukuo.

The site was also where the Kwantung Army of Japan planned the establishment of the Manchukuo regime, and Zheng Xiaoxu, an important figure in Manchukuo, stayed here during the preparatory period. From 1945 to 1955, it served as a Soviet military police station. After renovation in 1977, the original external architectural style was almost entirely lost, though the interior remained largely unchanged.
