Lushunkou Diyan Fort

Diyan Fort is situated on the eastern side of Lushun Port, on the sea-facing cliffs south of Golden Hill. It is one of China’s five major coastal forts, built in the late Qing Dynasty as one of the 13 coastal artillery batteries constructed by the Qing army in Lushunkou.

As a key fort defending Lushun Port, Diyan Fort stretches over 200 meters in length and about 50 meters in width. Underground, it houses six ammunition storage rooms, while above ground it is equipped with five 254mm-caliber coastal guns (Model 1895) and one 57mm gun. Most of these cannons and shells were purchased from the German Krupp factory, with only a few smaller-caliber ones manufactured locally in Chinese arsenals. To maximize the firepower, a circular fortress-style range-finding command post was built at the western end of the fort. From the sea, the fort appears with sheer cliffs at the front and blends into Golden Hill at the back, making it difficult for Japanese artillery to hit.

From the fort, visitors can view key sites of the Russo-Japanese War: the location where the naval battle broke out, the positions where three Russian ships were sunk during Japan’s attempts to block Lushun Port, and the spot where Admiral Makarov of the Russian Baltic Fleet perished. On the western side of Diyan Fort are two circular fortresses. Standing between them and shouting toward Lushun Port produces a strong echo, locally known as the “Strange Circle.”
