No. 28 Culture Street: The Embroidery Tower

Built in early 1901 as the dormitory for employees of an American grocery store. During the Japanese occupation, it served as a private residence. Legend has it that Zhang Zuolin’s sister was once imprisoned here. It was also one of the residences of Yoshiko Kawashima, and Wanrong once stayed here. From 1931 to 1941, Sui Yuzhen, the widow of the patriotic figure Zhou Wenfu, rented the place. In 1943, after Chen Minli’s factory was forcibly taken over by the Japanese, he went into seclusion here. In 1945, he became the first vice mayor of Lüda City. Later, the Embroidery Tower was used by the garrison, first as the office of the medical unit, and after 1971, it became a guesthouse.
