Classic comics meet rural landscapes: The creative Old Master Q mural in Zhutian, Pingtung

I’ve been to the [Mei] Coffee Roastery before, and I visited again during this short trip to Pingtung.

On the wall opposite the [Mei] Coffee Roastery, there's now a colorful mural of the classic comic character Old Master Q, authorized and even co-painted by the original creator. The addition of the Old Master Q mural means enjoying coffee here isn’t just about exotic vibes—it also brings a touch of childhood nostalgia. Savor the flavor of the coffee while admiring the charm of the mural.

The wall featuring the Old Master Q mural actually belongs to the mother-in-law of Old Master Q’s creator, Wang Zhe. The entire mural integrates the local rural landscape, giving off a joyful vibe as if Old Master Q is traveling through Pingtung. Actually, this was my second time photographing the mural—the first time I came, the characters’ faces were still being painted, waiting for the creator to come to Taiwan to finish them himself. So this is indeed an authorized mural with direct involvement from the creator.

As for the “Stream and Giant Tree” scene, it’s the bear’s favorite—but sadly, parts of the mural on that wall have already started to peel.

Walking further ahead, you’ll see, in order, scenes of Old Master Q and his friends cycling across the grasslands, resting under a treehouse, paragliding, fishing, and the classic scene of Old Master Q confessing his love to Miss Chen. Each scene is rendered in exquisite detail, also bringing back memories of reading those four-panel newspaper comics.

Since my last name also happens to be Chen, I felt a bit like I was being serenaded by Old Master Q... =^^=

This Mother’s Day, the creator of Old Master Q was also invited here to complete the facial details of the characters on the mural. You can even see the creator’s autograph on the wall, making this a certified, officially endorsed mural.

At the [Mei] Coffee Roastery, aside from the new Old Master Q mural, another new piece of foreign-style artwork has been added.

The road in the mural area is narrow, so please drive slowly. Tourists are often taking pictures in the middle of the road, and there are now better parking and traffic guides here on holidays.

The original foreign-style mural wall still looks stunning. The wall now also features tables and chairs, allowing visitors to take photos that blend even more naturally into the painting.

On the other side, there’s a newly set-up [Mei] Cinema mural area—I can’t wait to see it when it’s completed.

Before leaving, let’s snap one more photo of the Old Master Q mural—a joyful journey of Old Master Q through Pingtung.

Next to the Old Master Q mural is an 80-plus-year-old banyan tree. Thanks to the careful care of its owner (also the mother-in-law of the Old Master Q creator), it has grown horizontally into a tree form about 70 meters long. This “dragon-like” shape has earned it the nickname “One Dragon Banyan.”

Finally, here’s a little insider tip from Old Master Q: At the [Mei] Coffee Roastery in Zhutian, Pingtung, aside from 3D foreign-style murals, you can also sip coffee while admiring giant Old Master Q comic panels—something you definitely won’t find just anywhere else “out there”!

Pick a nice day, choose a great spot—here you’ll find traditional courtyard houses, foreign-style vibes, classic comics, and a cup of coffee that you can freely pair with any scene.
