The Most Beautiful Winter Scenery in Miaoli: A Sea of Ten Thousand Sunflowers Blooms Along Provincial Highway 1

Provincial Highway 1 in Miaoli, located along both sides of Tongxiao Road, is now home to over ten thousand sunflowers. Each sunflower smiles brightly toward the sun, swaying gently in the breeze.

The Agriculture Division of Tongxiao Township Office in Miaoli explained that these flowers were originally planted to serve as green manure. The division noted that these blooms unexpectedly became a flower-viewing attraction, mainly due to being planted during the local farmers’ fallow period. The sunflower seeds were sown during the fallow season, and once the petals fall, they turn into fertilizer. However, such a sea of flowers may not appear every year.

The Agriculture Division also stated that this sea of sunflowers is not only found along both sides of the Tongxiao section—approximately on the north side of the Tongxiao Tunnel entrance along Provincial Highway 1 (at the 134K mark)—covering about 9 hectares. There are also sunflowers distributed along Route 121. (In total, there are 47 hectares, of which 9 hectares are planted with sunflowers, and the remaining 38 hectares are planted with cosmos and zinnias.)

Sunflowers are considered a landscape crop (for fallow periods), and when they bloom, they become a scenic spot in Tongxiao. After the blooming period ends, the flowers are plowed back into the soil to serve as green manure for farmland, enhancing the natural elements of the fields. Currently, about 80% of the sunflowers have bloomed.

Currently, the sea of blooming sunflowers has unintentionally attracted many flower enthusiasts to come and admire them, turning into a new attraction in Miaoli.
