Hundreds of miniature snow huts are illuminated   Morioka Snow Lantern Festival opens Feb. 11

Visiting Iwate in winter? The "Morioka Snow Lantern" event, debuting on February 11, is a must-see highlight. Miniature snow huts glowing with candlelight illuminate the snowy nights, bringing a sense of warmth to the harsh winter of Japan's Tohoku region.

From February 11, over three consecutive days, the "Morioka Snow Lantern" will be held at two main venues — Morioka Castle Ruins Park and Morioka History and Culture Museum — as well as 11 sub-venues nearby. In addition to hundreds of miniature snow huts that emit a warm yellow glow at night, various snow sculptures will also be displayed at the venues. This small yet elegant winter lantern festival takes on a particularly tender beauty at night and is a sight not to be missed when visiting Iwate in winter.
