"Leigonghuo," Hidden in the Huatung Valley, Showcases the Most Beautiful Rice Paddy Scenery

Located in the Huatung Valley, the Dianguang Community is a small village with a population of just 200, nestled between the Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountain Range. Legend has it that strange fires appeared at night here, which is why it was formerly known as "Leigonghuo" (Thunder God Fire). The residents mainly grow rice, making it a typical small rural settlement. With its pleasant rice field landscapes, the area offers visitors the chance to breathe the purest air and enjoy the most leisurely of afternoons.

The Dianguang Community is tucked away within Guanshan Township, Taitung County, near the renowned Guanshan Water Park. Although Taitung is full of beautiful mountains and rivers, Dianguang Community allows visitors to get even closer to the land and nature. The community’s main residents are the Amis indigenous people and Hakka, so Amis indigenous culture can be found everywhere. With rice, coffee, and plums as its main products, visitors here can see the famous "Dianguang Terraces" and also enjoy fruit-picking activities.

Huang Han, a 24-year-old local young farmer, said that although 600 people are registered in the Dianguang Community, life in the tribe and finding work are not easy, so the actual resident population is only about 200. Huang Han takes visitors to Dianguang to experience the unique "Bamboo Cannon" activity. The history of the bamboo cannon dates back to the Qing Dynasty, when Qing soldiers once tried to take over the Dianguang Tribe. The local youth then used bamboo and electric soil to create bamboo cannons to scare off the Qing soldiers. This tradition has been passed down to today and has become a must-experience part of Dianguang's bamboo cannon culture.

Although Dianguang Community is famous for its rice field landscapes, it also grows plums and coffee. In recent years, to promote the community, the local community development association has launched local agricultural specialties such as "Dianguang Rice," "Dianguang Plum," and "Dianguang Coffee." They hope visitors can experience and consume locally, directly benefiting the local residents. Additionally, to help visitors gain a deeper understanding of the community, the development association has designed rural experience tours led by local volunteers, aiming to further promote tourism and let more people know about this place.

1. Dianguang Terraces
With nearly 200 hectares of farmland, the vast rice field scenery is comfortable and pleasant. From here, you can overlook the Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountain Range. The rice field views often attract photography enthusiasts.
2. Dianguang Elementary School
A miniature elementary school in the Huatung Valley, surrounded by pristine natural landscapes. It has been selected by the Ministry of Education as one of the top ten classic featured schools in Taiwan. Visitors can enjoy Dianguang Coffee here.
3. Dianguang Hakka Tulou
The Su family tulou, located halfway up the mountain in Guangxing, Dianguang, was built by Hakka people who migrated from Miaoli to Dianguang. It is also the first two-story building in Dianguang.
4. Guangxing Forest Trail
Situated in Dianguang Guangxing Forest Farm, Guanshan Township, Taitung County, this forest site covers an area of over 100 hectares and contains more than 500 species of native Taiwanese trees. Here, you can immerse yourself in the forest’s phytoncides.
5. Dianguang Mud Volcano
The best-preserved mud volcano in Taiwan, featuring the largest mud shield among all mud volcanoes in the country — a rare sight. The entire environment is sensitive and precious, with special conservation value in terms of geology, terrain, plants, and animals.
