The Taipei “Dadaocheng Fireworks Festival,” which has been held for 11 years, is rumored to be canceled this year due to the impact of last year’s Formosa Fun Coast dust explosion and reports that Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je dislikes one-off events such as fireworks displays. In response, the Taipei City Government’s Department of Information and Tourism stated: “This year, the decision to set off fireworks will be made by the event organizers themselves.”

The Dadaocheng Fireworks Festival has a 11-year history and has long been a highlight of Taipei’s annual Qixi celebrations. According to the China Times, due to safety concerns over large-scale public events following last year’s Formosa Fun Coast dust explosion, the Taipei City Department of Information and Tourism did not require this year’s “Taipei Riverside Music Festival,” which it tendered out, to include fireworks like in previous years. Instead, the decision was left to the event organizers.

Taipei City Department of Information and Tourism Director Jane Yuyan stated that this year’s “Taipei Riverside Music Festival” not only has an increased budget of NT$9 million but also features international-level performances for Taipei’s Qixi Festival. Additionally, with the budget doubled and the event duration extended to two months, the goal is to fill areas along the Tamsui and Keelung rivers—including Dadaocheng, Dajia, and Beitou—with music and people, rather than limiting the celebration to just one day of fireworks in Dadaocheng.

As for whether there will be fireworks, Jane Yuyan said that this year, organizers are specifically given the option to “plan for” fireworks, meaning it will be up to them, in coordination with musical performances, to decide whether or not to include them.

News of the possible cancellation of the Dadaocheng Fireworks Festival has drawn many online comments expressing regret, with netizens noting that the fireworks show has become a representative event of Taipei’s Qixi Festival. Even those who don’t attend in person often marvel at the broadcast. Local businesses are also concerned that canceling the Dadaocheng Fireworks Festival may affect tourist traffic and business.
