The world’s only market where trains pass right through — Thailand’s “Maeklong Railway Market” — has reopened as of today after nearly a year of railway renovations. Visitors can now explore the market while experiencing the unique thrill of a train passing right by them.

The Maeklong Railway Market combines a functioning marketplace with an active railway line and is also known as one of the world’s most dangerous markets. Visitors can stroll leisurely along the tracks between vendor stalls, but when the train announcement sounds, the vendors quickly pack up their goods to clear the way. As the train slowly passes by, people and the train remain just about 30 centimeters apart. This thrilling and unique spectacle has made it a must-visit attraction for travelers coming to Thailand.

In May 2015, the tracks were under renovation and the project experienced delays, and the market did not reopen until early April this year. Since the reopening was announced, it has already attracted many visitors, some of whom say that the renovated Maeklong feels cleaner.
