Laying a Colorful Carpet on the Hills: Wutong and Daylily Flowers Bloom in Succession at Hengshanping Park in Chiayi

As we approach May, the lush green treetops and trails in the mountains are dotted with snow-white blossoms—it’s now the peak of the wutong flower season. The Hengshanping Leisure Park in Meishan Township, Chiayi County, is currently in full bloom with wutong flowers, their white petals scattering across the ground like a snowy carpet. Park officials noted that aside from the wutong flowers, due to the cold snap earlier this year, the daylilies are expected to bloom around mid-May.

The Hengshanping Leisure Park in Meishan Township covers an area of 1.6 hectares, located beside Provincial Highway 3 in the township’s urban area. The land is owned by Yuxu Temple, which primarily enshrines the Dark Heavenly Emperor. Originally a hillside area covered with mixed woods and mahogany trees, the site was transformed over four years through community-funded tree planting and afforestation efforts as well as the development of a leisure park. Within just four years, the park has been planted with cherry blossoms, osmanthus, red plum, apricot, and peach trees, along with walking trails and mountain paths.

Currently, the wutong flowers in the park have reached their most beautiful stage, with their white petals drifting down and blanketing chairs and pathways in long stretches of white floral carpets. Park officials also mentioned that due to the cold snap at the beginning of this year, the blooming period of the daylilies will be slightly delayed compared to previous years, with an estimated bloom time around mid-May. When the daylily season arrives, vast golden-yellow blossoms will cover the hillsides, complementing the green of distant mountains, creating the most stunning floral seascape in the Meishan area in May.
