To celebrate the Year of the Tiger, Yuanlin Township Office organized an event called “Happy Tiger Year: Spring Couplets & Rituals” at the square in front of the office during the Lunar New Year. From early morning, thousands of people lined up to receive blessing cards, spring couplets, ritual offerings, red turtle cakes, milk, and stir-fried glass noodles. The atmosphere was lively and bustling.
“May the fortune tiger bring strong winds of luck, walking with the wind, good health, and great success in your career” — these four lines of blessings were offered by the Yuanlin Township Mayor to wish residents peace and prosperity. The crowd responded with loud cheers and continuous applause. This year, the organizers invited 24 renowned local calligraphers to create couplets on the spot. Due to the large turnout, 3,000 handwritten couplets were distributed in just one hour according to the order of number tags. The cultural section also specially printed 1,800 couplets for public collection. Additionally, children learned how to use ink and print blocks properly through the traditional craft of printing “Promotion and Prosperity” door god New Year pictures.
The day's program was rich and colorful: folk music performances by the Sanyi Community, dragon and lion dances by Raoming Elementary School, energetic cheerleading routines by Youyue Dance Troupe, and professional taekwondo demonstrations by Olympic Village. With a lineup of fun, festive, and rewarding activities, attendees praised the township office for putting on such a heartfelt event.
In line with the Lunar New Year, volunteer moms from the Xidong Community in Yuanlin taught participants how to DIY red turtle cakes and shared the secret of “brushing oil” to make them shiny and delicious after steaming. The activity attracted many onlookers who stopped to watch and collect samples. The township mayor also demonstrated his own ritual-making skills. The Yuanlin Spring Festival celebration in Changhua concluded successfully amid much joy and festivity.
