The film tells the story of young painter Valentin, who, after being abandoned by his lover without explanation, becomes lost in a world of fantasy, confined to his imagination all day. Unable to open up or connect with others, he sees the entire city of Paris as beautiful landscape paintings — except for his beloved grandmother Nina. The bustling crowds on the streets of Paris appear to him as expressive character portraits.

As he strolls through the dreamlike Paris he has imagined with his grandmother, passing one stunning street scene after another, Valentin shares the story of his departed same-sex partner and his own loneliness. To help Valentin better understand himself, Nina, despite the pain of her memories, recalls her tragic experiences in a concentration camp during her youth...
