This competition centers around the concept of “staring.” Within 90 minutes, pulse and heart rate are measured every 15 minutes to confirm that participants maintain a “staring” state—their emotions must remain very calm without any emotional reactions, and of course, falling asleep results in immediate disqualification. Past competitions saw Korean hip-hop artist Crush winning the championship in the 2016 staring contest, drawing much attention. On April 30, 2017, the fifth Staring Championship was held at Seoul’s Han River Park in Korea, where a trio dressed in pajamas won the title.
