Kirkjufell Mountain is one of the most famous attractions on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland. The name "Kirkjufell" means "church mountain" or "parish mountain," hence it is commonly translated as Church Mountain. Due to its remote location, the nearby town of Grundarfjörður only has simple guesthouses and no large-scale hotels, so most tour groups do not visit this place.

Timing and Settings
Iceland’s weather is highly unpredictable. Before we set off for Kirkjufell, it was snowing heavily, but when we arrived, the sky cleared instantly. Coupled with the warm color tones of dusk, everything looked incredibly beautiful—too beautiful to put into words. Little did we know it started snowing again after we finished shooting. For camera settings, I used a neutral density filter to slow the shutter speed to about 5 seconds to capture silky water flow, which also smoothed out the floating clouds. A graduated neutral density filter helped balance the exposure between the sky and the ground. Normally, automatic mode underexposes snow scenes, so manual mode is more suitable.
Safety Tips
We went to Iceland in March to shoot, with daytime temperatures averaging between 0 to 5°C. The top priority is staying warm—down jackets are essential, as are gloves, snow spikes, and gaiters. Be especially careful when walking on snow to avoid slipping or falling into deep holes. Also, don’t walk too close to cliffs, as the snow cover isn’t stable and can easily collapse.
