Do you know some useful tips for checked baggage when traveling by plane?

Due to the special nature of air transport, airplanes encounter various turbulences during flight. Additionally, significant pressure changes occur in the cabin during takeoff and landing. Therefore, airlines have specific packaging requirements for checked baggage.

Choosing a high-quality suitcase can better protect the items inside from damage. However, more expensive suitcases do not necessarily mean better quality. When selecting one, focus on the quality of key components such as the handle, wheels, telescopic handle, and lock, and also understand the relevant warranty terms. Here are three baggage protection tips to make your trip more pleasant.

Hard-shell suitcases: It’s best to add a cover

Hard-shell suitcases made of ABS styrene polymer are moisture-proof and pressure-resistant. Even in rainy or snowy weather, you don’t have to worry about the contents getting damp. Even if the suitcase is subjected to external impact, the items inside are less likely to be damaged. However, it’s worth noting that if the surface of the suitcase is smooth, it’s advisable to put a cover over it before checking in, or wrap it in plastic film at the airport. This helps prevent scratches from conveyor belts during transit.

Hiking backpacks: Don’t put items in the side pockets

Hiking backpacks have many straps and buckles. If not secured properly, they can get caught in the gaps of baggage conveyor belts. In mild cases, this may delay your backpack from catching the flight; in severe cases, the bag may be damaged and items lost. Additionally, hiking backpacks and regular backpacks have side pockets. Small items like umbrellas or trekking poles placed in these pockets may easily fall out during transit or in flight, leading to loss.

Fragile items: Use padding for isolation

If your checked suitcase contains fragile items such as glassware or alcohol, it’s recommended to use soft cloth or newspaper as padding to isolate them. It’s best to pack alcohol in a separate foam box as an inner container, then pack it again in a cardboard or wooden box as an outer package. When checking in, inform the counter staff that the baggage contains fragile items. They will attach a red “fragile” label to alert handlers to handle it with care.
