Many cyclists dislike wearing helmets, thinking it’s unnecessary and makes them look “dorky.” But do you know what kind of threat exposing your precious head poses to your life? Below are 14 common excuses cyclists give for not wearing helmets, along with their standard answers. After reading them, I believe you’ll understand just how much “life” is really worth.

14 STUPID reasons cyclists give for not wearing helmets, and their standard answers:

     1. My head is hard.

When you fall off a stationary bike onto the ground, your head hits the pavement at 7 miles per hour — fast enough to crack your skull and kill you.

     2. I’m just riding slowly on dirt roads or grass.

So what? Refer to reason #1 — are you moving slower than stopped? Is your route precisely planned with zero hazards?

     3. I don’t dress like a kid.

Of course not. In the mid-1970s, when helmets were first sold, hardly anyone wore them. Are you still living in that era?

     4. I don’t wear a helmet, but I’ve always been fine.

By that logic, we should stop vaccinating children — most kids who don’t get vaccinated are doing just fine too.

     5. Wearing a helmet makes you look stupid.

People with safety awareness can prevent serious head injuries — the kind that can truly make you stupid.

     6. I won’t die.

Everyone knows it’s not just bicycles that cause accidents. In the U.S., 200–300 people suffer permanent brain injuries every day — a huge risk factor. There are indeed about 2–3 bicycle-related deaths daily, and most of those occur because riders didn’t wear proper helmets or engaged in high-risk behavior.

     7. My friends (or parents) don’t wear helmets.

If your friend jumps off a bridge, would you follow? We can learn good habits from others — this isn’t one of them.
