Common Cycling Hand Signals

Riding in a group allows cyclists to feel the strength of unity and makes the journey more enjoyable. When cycling in formation, only the leader can see the road conditions ahead, while those following rely on the leader's hand signals to determine the next direction or the location of obstacles. Below, we introduce some commonly used hand signals during cycling and their meanings.

       1. Extending the left hand diagonally downward toward the ground indicates an obstacle on the left side; the right hand indicates the same for the right side.

       2. Extending the left hand straight out to the side signals a left turn; the right hand signals a right turn.

       3. Raising the hand upward briefly signals that there is an obstacle ahead and riders should slow down and spread out.

       4. Holding the hand upward without lowering it signals that the group needs to stop.

       5. Moving the left hand diagonally downward and upward repeatedly indicates a crosswind from the left, and the group should ride closer together on the right side; the right hand indicates the same for the right side.
