"To do a good job, you must first sharpen your tools." In addition to having a bike suitable for long-distance riding, equipment and other supplies are equally important.

Cycling gear: one cycling helmet (essential for safety); a pair of gloves (to prevent slipping, abrasion, and shock; if considering special weather, prepare one full-finger and one half-finger pair); 1–2 pairs of cycling shorts (their importance in long-distance cycling goes without saying); one pair of cycling glasses (preferably polarized) to protect against wind and insects; two headbands (for sun protection, sweat wiping, head covering, etc.); one lightweight cycling raincoat; clipless pedals/cleated shoes (help improve pedaling efficiency and reduce power loss); cycling jersey, quick-dry shirts, windbreakers/pants, etc.

Bike equipment: one cyclometer; one portable pump; 1–2 water bottles; choose between two bike lights or one front light; one rear bike rack; one saddlebag (choose capacity based on trip length and number of items); choose one of the following: handlebar bag, waist pack, or shoulder bag; one pair of spare V-brake pads; two spare inner tubes; two derailleur cables; tape and rope; chain lube.

Repair tools: 4/5/6mm hex wrenches; wrench (recommended for 15/16 nuts); one each of a universal Phillips and flathead screwdriver; tire repair kit; chain breaker; two spare inner tubes; one chain connector link; seatpost bag/triangle bag (for storing repair tools).

Medications: waterproof band-aids; medicated adhesive plaster; cold medicine; anti-diarrhea capsules; soft-packaged Huoxiang Zhengqi Water; Yunnan Baiyao plaster/Baiyao spray; Voltaren gel (highly effective for relieving muscle and lower back pain), etc.

The above items are all recommended. Experienced cyclists will choose their gear and tool sets based on personal needs. If you're joining a long-distance ride for the first time, it's good to carry as much as your load allows—better than being stranded in the middle of nowhere with a broken bike and no help. Other daily necessities or equipment can be decided based on individual circumstances, which won't be elaborated here.

Chain breaker

Chain breakers are often overlooked by some cyclists. But imagine the predicament of having your chain snap while riding—and you might not mind the extra weight. Also, carrying two chain connector links is a very practical choice.

Hex key set

Different types and sizes of L-shaped hex keys make bike adjustments smoother and easier.

Pump

A practical, compact, and portable pump is one of the essential tools—don’t forget the tire repair kit either.

Saddlebag

A saddlebag is essential for long-distance cycling. Choose a fully waterproof model whenever possible—it adds safety and peace of mind to your journey. Carrying a backpack is strongly not recommended. A durable, adequately sized saddlebag that suits your actual needs is a valuable asset for long rides.

Multi-tool

A versatile multi-tool is crucial for long-distance cycling.

Spoke wrench

A spoke wrench may not be practical for most cyclists. If your wheel rim has issues, it’s recommended to have it adjusted at a nearby bike shop or by a professional.

Cleaner and lubricant

Chain maintenance is actually much more important than you might think. Both cleaner and lubricant should be carried. Of course, considering weight, you may not need such large packages for actual use on the road.

Horn

Besides lights and a cycling computer, you might also consider installing a horn on your bike. It can enhance your safety while riding through cities, though this is often overlooked.

Chain cleaner

This is a chain cleaner. Long-distance cycling may involve harsh weather conditions—rain, dust accumulation, mud—and you’ll need to clean and maintain your chain promptly afterward.

Finally, we hope a bicycle journey will bring you an extraordinary travel experience and deeper insights and growth in life.
