Charming Houtong: Coal Mine Museum Park Grandly Opens on July 24

Houtong is not only the birthplace of the gold-mining heritage of Jiufen and Jinguashi but also the site of Taiwan’s largest coal mine. Nearby attractions include the Coal Transport Bridge, the Rui San Mining Coal Preparation Plant, a Japanese Shinto shrine, the Danlan Ancient Trail's Golden Inscription Monument, and the Sandiaoling Waterfall. The stunning mountain and sea scenery, along with rich cultural stories, makes it an ideal destination for family trips during the summer vacation. The "Houtong Coal Mine Museum Park" preserves the former mining sites and records the stories of miners, offering an easy and engaging way to explore this black-gold history.

On the opening day of the "Houtong Coal Mine Museum Park," a series of celebratory activities will begin at 2:00 PM, including the park’s lighting ceremony, a vintage toy market, street performances, and a stamp-collecting lucky draw game with prizes such as bicycles, digital cameras, monkey-shaped gold jewelry, and hiking backpacks. This will be followed by exciting stage performances, featuring martial arts by Houtong Elementary School students, the Rui Fang Xing An Temple Miners' Centipede Parade, performances by Eastern Wings Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble, and original music Golden Horse Award winner Zhang Yuwei and the Coke Tar Band. In the evening, there will be a fluorescent lion dance by the Hongsheng Lion Dance Troupe and a spectacular fireworks show.

The "Houtong Coal Mine Museum Park" has specially invited renowned director Wu Nien-jen to serve as the park’s tourism ambassador. Wu Nien-jen produced a promotional short film for Houtong, capturing the essence of his hometown with the tagline: “History, culture, scenery, tranquility—these are her only specialties.” To help establish the museum park as a popular attraction along the Pingxi Railway Line, the Taipei County Government and Taiwan Railways Administration have collaborated with well-known illustrator “Fu Da Hou” to design four colorful train liveries, each full of childlike charm and nostalgia.
