A Hidden Gem of Northern Skiing – The Prince Hotel New Furano

Situated in Hokkaido, The Prince Hotel New Furano is just steps away from the ski area. After skiing during the day, you can soothe your tired body and mind in the hotel’s hot springs, then head to the café in the adjacent forest — the filming location of the drama "Warm Days" — to enjoy hand-brewed coffee, explore artisan workshops such as the Forest Elves’ Balcony where artists reside, and visit the newly opened exhibition hall dedicated to the renowned Japanese screenwriter Kōbo Abe. In the evening, the stone-built Soh’s Bar quietly glows amid the forest. It’s a great place to take in the tranquility of Furano and immerse yourself in the atmospheric northern forest ambiance crafted by Kōbo Abe.

The acclaimed screenwriter Kōbo Abe shot numerous Japanese dramas in Furano, which greatly boosted the region’s fame. This stone bar was also designed by him. Through the snowy windows, you might occasionally spot a sable, as two of them are said to live in the forest.

Since Kōbo Abe was a smoker, the bar was designed to allow indoor smoking, and it even sells cigars. The bar’s promotional flyer even reads “for miserable smokers.” He also had a deep love for nature, so the design features large windows that let in the beautiful forest views. It’s said that Kōbo Abe’s personal seat has been preserved here. Soh’s Bar stays open until midnight, and after skiing at The Prince Hotel New Furano, many guests enjoy lingering at the bar in the evening.
