Take your travel experience to the next level — explore charming towns with Taiwan’s first gaming app

To promote Taiwan’s distinctive scenic spots, the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications launched its first tourism game app “踩踩卡打车” (go go biker) earlier this year, which has been downloaded over 50,000 times. Building on this success, the bureau has released the second version of “踩踩卡打车,” this time themed around the newly announced “Taiwan’s Top 10 Small Tourist Towns.” With integrated GPS positioning, players can now hop on a virtual tricycle and explore all ten small tourist towns across Taiwan — all with just a smartphone in hand!

Following the announcement of “Taiwan’s Top 10 Small Tourist Towns” in mid-March, the Tourism Bureau incorporated the local scenery, cuisine, and entertainment offerings of Taipei’s Beitou, New Taipei’s Ruifang, Taoyuan’s Daxi, Yilan’s Jiaoxi, Taichung’s Dajia, Nantou’s Jiji, Changhua’s Lukang, Tainan’s Anping, Kaohsiung’s Meinong, and Kinmen’s Jinshui into the game design as routes for the tricycle. In addition to retaining the core gameplay elements from the first version — such as the thrill and competition of arcade racing, as well as obstacles and weather effects like thunderstorms to increase challenge — players must also collect various power-ups before their energy runs out to maintain stamina or boost speed. All these features make the game incredibly engaging.

Notably, the second version of the game introduces regional positioning functionality. For example, if a player is in northern Taiwan, the game will automatically unlock northern city levels based on their location, allowing them to learn about local attractions. Similarly, when traveling in southern Taiwan, entering the game will instantly activate the southern city levels, offering a highly localized experience.

The Tourism Bureau has also created a real-life version of the “踩踩卡打车 — Tricycle Game Promotion Vehicle”! By blending the physical and virtual worlds, they’ve developed a creatively designed, cool, and fun customized tricycle equipped with actual game devices and a large screen, enabling players to experience rich gameplay content on the spot. The “踩踩卡打车 — Tricycle Promotion Vehicle” will tour major attractions across Taiwan. Its promotional itinerary includes stops at the Tamsui Bicycle Path on May 19, the Northeast Coast’s Fulong Bicycle Path on May 20, Sun Moon Lake Bicycle Path on May 26, and the Dapeng Bay Bicycle Path on May 27.
