Do you remember the household census from your childhood, when officials would come to your home to stamp forms and verify information? But has anyone ever taken part in a census of insects or birds? With International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22nd approaching, the Subtropical Ecology Society and Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters are jointly hosting the "2012 International Day for Biological Diversity Carnival." There will also be a biodiversity experience event on May 19th, a species survey activity from May 19th to 20th, and an International Day for Biological Diversity symposium on May 22nd. These events will introduce the public to the various species in nature and even guide participants in observing amphibians and reptiles at night. Free registration is now open.

In this year’s series of International Day for Biological Diversity activities, events include biodiversity experiences, biodiversity surveys (BioBlitz), and biodiversity seminars. The content covers introductions to biodiversity, getting to know fruits and vegetables, stories of Yangmingshan, plant and insect observation, bird watching, and more. The symposium will also feature sharing sessions by American environmental artist Jane Ingram Allen and American 100-mile food miles practitioner Marissa Markowitz, sharing their personal experiences. All events will take place at Yangmingshu House in Yangmingshan National Park. Except for the biodiversity experience, which allows on-site registration, all other events require advance registration. All activities are free to attend.

The annual May 22nd was designated as International Day for Biological Diversity to commemorate the establishment of the international Convention on Biological Diversity. On this day each year, countries around the world hold related events to remind everyone of the importance of biodiversity and to promote the three main goals outlined in the convention: "protection, sustainable use, and fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources."
