In response to World Oceans Day, a series of film screenings ignite new hope for the oceans

June 8 is internationally recognized as World Oceans Day. Starting tomorrow, the Chiayi Forest District Office under the Forestry Bureau and the Society of Wilderness will hold the "2012 World Oceans Day – Igniting New Hope for the Oceans – Ocean Film Exhibition Series." Through internationally renowned films such as "Flying Fish," "Sold Down the River," and "Deep Blue Sea," the public will be guided to understand the current state of the oceans. Additionally, ocean-themed lectures titled "Seeing the Ocean Anew" and "Sustainable Seafood" will help society appreciate the value of the oceans and raise awareness about ocean conservation.

The opening film of the ocean film exhibition is "Flying Fish," premiering on the evening of June 8 at the plaza in front of the Cypress Forest Life Village of the Chiayi Forest Management Office. This film is a narrative ecological documentary produced by the same production company behind Oscar-nominated documentaries such as "The Story of the Weeping Camel" and "March of the Penguins." It tells the story of an endangered hawksbill turtle, which, after being born on the coast of Florida, USA, embarks on a perilous 25-year, over 10,000-kilometer journey across the vast Atlantic Ocean to find its way home.

In addition, "Sold Down the River," which explores the relationship between tourism and marine ecological resources, will be screened on July 27, and "Deep Blue Sea," which looks at protecting the oceans from above, will be shown on September 14. Beyond the film screenings, two ocean-themed lectures will be held in the auditorium of the Chiayi Forest District Office. On July 7, the lecture "Seeing the Ocean Anew" will allow the public to experience the richness and importance of Taiwan’s marine ecology through film. On August 4, the "Sustainable Seafood" lecture will explain the relationship between seafood on our plates and ocean conservation.
