The King of Azaleas in Wutai is in full bloom — now’s the perfect time to chase cherry blossoms

Located in Wutai Township, Pingtung, azalea trees have been planted since the Japanese colonial period, all of which are native Taiwanese species. Every spring and winter, the azaleas in Wutai burst into bloom, attracting numerous visitors, and the most famous among them — the King of Azaleas — is the highlight of the annual bloom. This year, due to weather conditions, the blooming period has been delayed. Many visitors have been waiting since the Lunar New Year, and only recently have the blossoms finally reached about 80% bloom. The next one to two weeks will be the best time to view them. The King of Azaleas is estimated to be over 50 years old, with a tree shape like an umbrella. When in full bloom, it resembles a giant umbrella of azaleas. Visitors who wish to witness the splendor of the King of Azaleas should seize the opportunity to visit during this optimal blooming period.
