Hong Kong’s New Year’s Eve fireworks to feature record-breaking duration — airfare deals under HK$10,000, limited time left to grab

As the year 2017 comes to an end, many Taiwanese are choosing to ring in the new year abroad. Nearby Hong Kong has always been a top choice for Taiwanese travelers celebrating the New Year, and the high-altitude New Year’s Eve fireworks over Victoria Harbour are among Asia’s most dazzling countdown parties. This year, the Victoria Harbour New Year’s Eve fireworks and music show is expected to last ten minutes, featuring a rich combination of light, sound, and special effects. The overall visual span will also be more than 35% larger than last year, making it the grandest display in history.

Before the countdown begins, the renowned Australian performance troupe “Strange Fruit” will put on a show starting at 10 p.m. on December 31st around Tsim Sha Tsui’s Star Ferry Pier, presenting the world premiere of their performance piece “Deco-Sphere.” Performers will climb onto a giant sphere with a diameter of about 2 meters, swaying and dancing atop columns approximately 5 meters high, delivering stunning performances through drama, dance, and acrobatics. At 11 p.m., four-color “wish流星” fireworks symbolizing sweetness, health, happiness, and prosperity will be launched every 15 minutes from the rooftops of five buildings on Hong Kong Island, allowing visitors to make their New Year’s wishes.

After enjoying the magnificent New Year’s Eve fireworks over Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong’s nightlife is just getting started. Central’s Lan Kwai Fong is a must-visit party hotspot for New Year’s celebrations. Those with a strong tolerance for alcohol can experience “bar-hopping,” bouncing between multiple bars in one night and joining tourists from around the world in soaking up the festive atmosphere. For those looking to warm up during the festivities, late-night snacks include Hong Kong’s classic winter dishes such as hot pot (da bin lu), congee, and clay pot rice—authentic and delicious choices.

After an all-night party and food adventure, head to Hong Kong’s country parks to catch the first rays of sunlight in 2018. Whether it’s watching the sunrise over Tai Mo Shan amid sea of clouds or witnessing the sun slowly rise over the sea in Shek O, these spots are perfect for IG photo ops.
