For travelers catching early flights or facing long layovers, Yotel, located right inside airport terminals, is a highly convenient and comfortable choice. The room design concept combines Tokyo’s capsule hotels with airline first-class cabins, maximizing every inch of limited space. Even the check-in process mimics an airport boarding procedure, with self-service kiosks available for registration.

The rooms are like small rectangular honeycomb cells, with no windows to the outside world. Before entering, you must step up two small stairs and open a space-age door, making you feel as if you’re about to be hypnotized and ageless for decades, entering a long-haul flight.

I opted not for the roughly 100-square-foot “luxury” Premium Cabin, but deliberately chose the standard room, which is half the size—more like a tiny Hong Kong subdivided flat. Basically, once you open the door, aside from a single bed and a cramped bathroom right next to it, there’s no extra space. Even the desk and chair are foldable like those on an airplane, and the desk cleverly hides behind a mirror. The bed is rather high, requiring a footstool to climb onto, resembling both a train sleeper cabin and a mountain cave dwelling. Upon closer inspection, you’ll find that the space beneath the bed forms the ceiling of the lower bunk—making even better use of space than a Hong Kong subdivided flat.

The room’s equipment, designed by Airbus engineers, is the result of meticulous thinking. Aside from maximizing space, it also emphasizes practicality and ease of maintenance. The shower has strong water pressure but won’t splash everywhere and wet the toilet. The mattress is thick and comfortable, and the walls are superbly soundproof. It wasn’t until I realized there was no drink menu or flight attendant serving meals that I remembered this room wouldn’t take off—and that I had another flight to catch.
